Emlaghmore Lodge

is a small, Georgian fishing lodge, beside the Atlantic in a wild and beautiful part of West Connemara. All bedrooms have magnificent views of rivers, lakes, mountains or the sea. Emlaghmore is renowned for offering its guests a superb culinary experience, including the finest and freshest of local meat and seafood. Your host, Nicholas Tinne, owned and ran Dublin’s famous Snaffles restaurant for many years. He is a superb raconteur with many interesting stories of Connemara and its people. Nearby are the Connemara National Park, the magnificent Kylemore Abbey and the pretty fishing village of Roundstone.

Emlaghmore Lodge is near the village of Ballyconneely with its championship links golf course, in a wild and beautiful part of west Connemara. The lodge looks out over its own little river towards the famous Twelve Pins, the main mountain range in Connemara. Between the river and the mountains is the Roundstone Bog, a famous conservation area and a haven for otters, birds of prey and unusual and interesting plant species. Behind the house is the Atlantic Ocean, with seals, rocky islands and sandy beaches.

Emlaghmore Lodge has been the holiday house of the Tinne family for more than 80 years; several years ago it became their permanent home, and, more recently it was opened to guests. The house is furnished with antiques, family portraits and memorabilia from the family's long involvement in trade with Demerara in the West Indies.

This, the most westerly part of Ireland, has long been renowned for its dramatic landscape of mountain, sea and sky, which can be experienced at its best in the nearby Connemara National Park. There are other attractions too. The Aran Islands and Inishbofin are well worth a visit, as is the bustling town of Clifden, Kylemore Abbey and the Killary, Irelands most famous fjord. The pretty harbour village of Roundstone, with good restaurants and pubs, is only six miles away, and there are golden coral beaches and snow-white beaches of foraminifera, whole microscopic shells, quite beautiful and very rare. Local activities include fishing, sailing, golf, horse riding, surfing, painting and hill walking.

Emlaghmore Lodge is an idyllic and peaceful holiday location only a few yards from the sea. When you stay here you can do just as much or as little as you like.


Directions:
From Roundstone take the R341 for six miles and turn inland at large two-storied white house with gables, 100 yards south of a wide stone bridge. The gate is on the right 100 yards up the lane (second gate on right).
